Verlyn Nordseth Obituary

 

Verlyn A. Nordseth, age 95, of Watertown, SD, passed away surrounded by his family on Wednesday, June 22, 2022, at Avantara Watertown.  Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, July 6, 2022, at Watertown First United Methodist Church. Pastor Rob Salmonson will officiate.  Music will be provided by Lesa Dahl as organist. The service will be live-streamed via the Crawford-Osthus Funeral Chapel Facebook page.

Visitation will be at Crawford-Osthus Funeral Chapel in Watertown on Tuesday, July 5, 2022, from 5:00-7:00 p.m.

Burial will be at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Watertown at a later date. Active pallbearers will be David Klatt, Quincy Jones, Dan Jenson, Jeff Jenson, Mark Ryan, and Tom Nordseth.  Military graveside honors will be conducted by Codington County Post #17 of the American Legion, Watertown.

Verlyn was born on November 14, 1926, in Inwood, IA, to Olaf and Gertrude (Johnson) Nordseth.  Gertrude passed away when Verlyn was 4 years old, and Olaf married Helen (Miller) Nordseth.  Verlyn was baptized and confirmed in the Canton Lutheran Church in Canton, SD.  He attended school in Inwood and farmed until he joined the U.S. Army in August of 1946.  He served in the Army of Occupation in Japan until he was discharged in December of 1947.

In February of 1951 he married Muriel Peterson.  Muriel passed away in September of 1973.  He continued farming until he moved to Watertown and went to work for North Central Airlines as a station agent in 1959.  Verlyn married Maxine Crandall Stemwedel in September of 1974.  He retired from farming and Republic Airlines in 1986. After retiring, Verlyn worked for the Codington County Soil Conservation planting and cultivating trees all over Codington County until 2011.

He was a member of Watertown First United Methodist Church, Grass Lake Conservation Club, SD Crop Improvement Association, the American Legion and the VFW, where he served on the Honor Guard and Avenue of Flags.  Verlyn loved farming, raising pigs, cattle and horses.  He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and going to coffee with his friends.

Verlyn in survived by his wife, Maxine of Watertown, SD; two daughters: Gail (Ross) Scriver of Sioux Falls, SD, and Renee (Mark) Ryan of Ham Lake, MN; two grandchildren: Tracy (Scriver) Jones of Sioux Falls, SD, and Brett Scriver of Minneapolis, MN; three great-granddaughters: Lily, Elena and Kailee; four great-grandsons: Owen, Anthony, Adrian and Jerry; and one brother, Dean Nordseth.

Verlyn was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter, Gwendi Nordseth, three brothers: Roy, Jerry, and Ordell Nordseth; and one sister, Carole.
