Twyla Gjerde Obituary
Twyla J. Gjerde, age 91, of Watertown, SD, passed away on Monday, October 3, 2022, at Prairie Lakes Healthcare System in Watertown. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, October 7, 2022, at St. Martin’s Lutheran Church in Watertown. Pastor Paul Kuckhahn will officiate. Music will be provided by Suzy Steinmetz as organist.
Visitation will be at Crawford-Osthus Funeral Chapel in Watertown on Thursday, October 6, 2022, from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. and prior to the service at the church on Friday.
Burial will be at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Watertown. Honorary pallbearers will be: Dan Guthmiller, Lloyd Brekke, Dr. Ed Larson, Steve Weber, Jim Stolp, and Don Fryslie. Active pallbearers will be Twyla’s nephews, great-nephews, and great great-nephews.
Twyla was born on August 17, 1931, in Minnehaha County, SD. She was the daughter of George and Hanna (Aaberg) Wendling, and sister to Milton and Dale. She attended school at Brantford #2 and graduated from Hazel High School in 1950.
On February 12, 1959, Twyla married George Gjerde at New Hope Lutheran Church in rural Hayti, SD. They farmed in the Hazel area until their retirement. They later relocated to Watertown.
Twyla was a member of Bethlehem ELCA in Vienna, and in 2012 became a member of St. Martin’s Lutheran Church in Watertown.
She enjoyed being in the kitchen, especially making lutefisk, crocheting, knitting, dancing, traveling, and various crafts. Twyla volunteered at St. Martin’s Lutheran School and loved her school children.
Twyla is survived by numerous nieces and nephews; sister-in-law, Margaret Gjerde; and many friends and extended family.
Twyla was preceded in death by her husband, George; her parents, brothers: Milton (Juliet) Wendling, and Dale (MaryAnn) Wendling; in-laws: Gertie (Alfred) Bjorkman, Selmar (Mildred) Gjerde, Joseph Gjerde, Alice (Robert) McCutchen, Lloyd Gjerde, Reuben (Marvel) Gjerde, and Maurice Gjerde.
