Michael D. RedWing, age 62, of Watertown, SD, passed away on Wednesday, August 11, 2021, at the Wilmot Care Center. Memorial services will be at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 18, 2021, at Crawford-Osthus Funeral Chapel. Pastor Steve Biswell will officiate. Music will be provided by Mike Morgan.
Visitation will be at the chapel on Tuesday from 5-7 p.m. Burial will be at a later date.
Michael was born on December 10, 1958, to Virgil and Alice (Wilcox) Redwing (Howey), in Watertown SD. Michael was raised from middle school by his foster parents, Sharla and Gareth Hamen in Castlewood, SD. He attended grade school in Watertown and graduated from Castlewood High School. He then attended college for two years at Orange City, IA, and returned to Watertown to attend and graduate from Lake Area Vo-Tech for Auto Mechanics. He married Sheila Swanson June 5, 1982. Michael worked at Brookings Tire Center but due to paint allergies had to change professions. They worked on a grain farm in Long Lake, SD, then at Bob Meyer’s Dairy Farm. He worked at various additional part time farm jobs in the area. He also worked many years at All State Co., where they made lawn mower bags and various medical equipment. He then worked at Dakota Sioux Casino in security until he retired in 2013 due to health reasons after working there for just under 16 years.
He still holds the two mile state record that he earned while living in Castlewood. Michael loved dogs, cats, cars, movies (detective shows) and coffee with family and friends at The Wheel Inn. He was a computer whiz and fixed computers.
Michael is survived by his wife Sheila, his 5 brothers: Steve Redwing of Watertown, SD, Guy (Joan) Redwing, of Apple Valley, MN, Robert (Shirley) Poelstra of Andover, MN, Gary Hamen of Castlewood, SD, and James Lauseng of Watertown, SD; and 4 of his sisters: Valinda Redwing-White of Watertown, SD, Valerie (Andronico) Castillio, of Minneapolis, MN, Angelina (Tracy) Schaefer of Watertown, SD, Julie (Tim) Hofwald of Castlewood, SD; 10 nieces; 11 nephews; 16 great-nephews; 16 great-nieces, his father Virgil and Step-Mother MaryAlice of Mound MN; and his foster parents Gareth and Sharla Hamen of Castlewood SD.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Alice (Wilcox) (Redwing) Howey, Step-father Robert L. Howey, grandmother, C. Ruth Wilcox, his sister, E. Ruth (Redwing) Poirier, and his niece, Jillian (White) Buchmann.
