James "Jim Leuning Obituary

James "Jim" F. Leuning, age 86, of Watertown, SD formerly of Brooklyn Park, MN, passed away on Saturday, February 3, 2024, at his residence in Watertown.  Graveside services will be held at a later date at Calvary Lutheran Cemetery in Hendricks, MN.

Jim was born on October 8, 1937, in Hendricks, MN, to Fredrick and Kathryn (Needham) Leuning.  He graduated from Hendricks High School in 1956.  Jim continued his education at South Dakota State University.  While attending SDSU he also served as the State Honeybee Inspector.

On October 25, 1958, Jim married Alice Christopherson.  Jim initially managed Jim's Gas Station in Rapid City, SD.  Seeking new challenges, Jim and his family moved to Brooklyn Park, MN, where Jim worked for a close friend as a TV Repairman.  One day, just after he had finished a TV repair call, Jim decided to stop by Honeywell.  Jim was asked to take the electrical test and submit his resume. Several weeks later, having not heard back from Honeywell, he decided to stop in again. As luck would have it, the hiring manager was on the phone with one of the plant managers who was looking for someone with electrical skills. Jim was hired on the spot and asked to start work the following morning. He retired from Honeywell 32 years later. While at Honeywell Jim completed his bachelor’s degree in business at the University of Minnesota, he graduated in 1978.

Jim's interests were as varied as his career. He was an enthusiast of leather carving, creating intricate designs that became treasured gifts for family and friends. He and Carolyn (Eidahl) enjoyed traveling across the United States. Jim enjoyed the exploration and the pleasure of new experiences and successfully traveled to all 50 states, the last one being the Hawaiian Islands in 2023. Jim was also an avid outdoorsman, a member of Ducks Unlimited, he cherished moments spent hunting and fishing with friends and family. After retirement, Jim’s love of golf found him on the greens perfecting his game and enjoying the camaraderie of fellow golfers at the Hendricks golf course, he and his brother Philip (Leuning) spent many summers playing in the men’s league.

Jim is survived by his daughters, Kim (Mike) Peterson, of Medina, MN, and Lisa Marko (Bruce Quitmeyer), of Excelsior, MN; one brother, Philip (Karen) Leuning, of Arco, MN; grandchildren, Ellie Peterson, of Chicago, IL, Madison Marko, of Palo Alto, CA, Jack Peterson, of Wayzata, MN, and Ava Marko, of New York, NY, and close personal companion Carolyn Eidahl, of Watertown, SD.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents; son Kevin; brothers, Donald and Howard; sisters, Ann and Lilian.
