Ervin Schumacher Obituary

Ervin Schumacher, age 97, of Eureka, SD, passed away Saturday, February 3, 2024, at the Avera Eureka Healthcare Center.  A memorial service will be at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, February 8, 2024, at Lien-Straub Funeral Chapel in Eureka, SD. Pastor Ryan Gage will officiate.

Visitation will be at the Lien-Straub Funeral Chapel in Eureka on Thursday from 4 - 5:30 p.m.

A private burial will be at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Watertown.

He was born to Christina (Klooz) and Christian Schumacher on the Schumacher farm NE of Eureka in McPherson Co. along with his twin sister, Erma. Erwin grew up on a farm in a family with eight siblings.  He met the love of his life, Gertrude, at a dance in Ashley, North Dakota.  They married and bought a farm of their own one year after they were married.  He farmed on his own for eleven years with his wife and two children.

Erwin received his General Equivalency Diploma and his college degree at the university branch at Ellendale, North Dakota.  He taught high school for three years and then worked as a Child Welfare Worker for the State of South Dakota.  From 1964 until 1990, he was South Dakota State Medical Director in Pierre.  After retirement, he and Gertrude continued living in Pierre, dividing their time wintering in Mesa, Arizona, and traveling.

Erwin spent his time making woodwork projects, refinishing antiques, keeping up their homes, and making stained glass and beautiful jewelry for each member of the family.  He thought his homemade wine was the best and his apple pies were given rave reviews. He painted, with meticulous and exquisite artistry, his own Ukrainian eggs.  Erwin had a delightful sense of humor.  He loved writing and published five books, in which he told of the family’s emigration struggles and successes.  He wrote of his stark beginnings in a farm home with no modern conveniences on to the capital of South Dakota and a fine tree farm outside of Pierre. In his own words, the lesson of his life is this: ……in America the opportunities are available to anyone who has the desire and determination to work and get ahead. There are times when we must sacrifice to obtain the life we dream about for ourselves and our children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

Erwin’s greatest loves were his faith, Gertrude, his two children, four grandchildren, and great grandchildren.  He always sent his farewells with a kiss, hug, and telling us he loved us.

Erwin is survived by his two children: Randall Schumacher (Tamara Rogers), Candace Schumacher; four grandchildren: Tate Hilmoe (Jessica), Holly Nielsen (Paul), Destiny Hagen (Joe), Reeve Schumacher (Melanie); and eight great grandchildren: Xander Nielsen, Hudson Nielsen, Elizabeth Hilmoe, Zoe Hilmoe, Bennett Hagen, Everly Hagen, Ocean Schumacher, Messidor Schumacher.

He was proceeded in death by his wife Gertrude, mother Christina, his father Christian; six brothers (Christian, Reinhold, William, Edward, Albert “Ace”, and Arnold); and four sisters (Anna Becker, Eleanora Heinrich, Erma Schumacher, and Mildred in infancy).
