Dallas Ouren Obituary

Dr. Dallas Victor Lee Ouren was born on Nov 13, 1940, to Russell & Viola Ouren of Terrace, MN.  Dallas passed away on June 12, 2022, at the Estelline Nursing Care Center in SD, at the age of 81.

After graduating with a PhD from the U of M, Dallas went on to teach Philosophy and Correspondence classes for many years at the U of M and Fargo.  He was also fluent in many languages. He also went on to write many text books & other various books, with some being dedicated to his sisters, Marilyn Erickson and Jan Flesland.

He adored his sisters & family.  As time went on, he made sure to contact them on a daily basis and "check in".  Holidays were very important to him, & he looked forward to the fun times of playing whist, attempting to teach family how to play chess and contributing a dish with different tasty spices, as he enjoyed cooking as well.

Family always looked forward to his unusual, unique gifts at Christmas time, as he carefully chose something that he knew they either collected or something fun and quirky.   He was the life of the party at family gatherings, along with his brother-in-law, "Elly Erickson", always coming up with something interesting for entertainment for each and every holiday spent at the Flesland farm.  The videos and photos will forever be cherished.

Dallas was most passionate about genealogy, traveling and reading books.  He spoke most highly of a trip he took to Canada with his two sisters and family after renting a van, making a road trip to see distant family and see the sights.  He also traveled most of the United States and many other countries.  He has many slides of all his travels and enjoyed showing them to others.

Dallas was ecstatic to be at Estelline Nursing Care Center where his two sisters also had resided.  He was very interested in the counties of South Dakota and requested many books from the book mobile regarding the history in those counties.  Along with his sisters, he was very passionate about the National Music Museum, as that is where a relative has instruments on display in Vermillion, SD.

Dallas was always drawn to Hanska, MN, as that is where his grandmother came from Tonsberg, Norway, to live, and his grandfather was founder of the State Bank in Hanska.  He traveled with his sisters to the Nora Church in Hanska quite often, with the Centennial Celebration being one of the highlights.

The care Dallas received in such a beautiful "home" was the best.  Your constant and complete care at ENCC meant the world to our family right through to the end of life care.   Thank you so much for all that you do!

He was preceded in death by his loving parents and three sisters, Marilyn Erickson, Jan Flesland, and Omie Ouren.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Nora Church, Hanska, MN, or the National Music Museum in Vermillion, SD.
